… and after I went to the dogs?

Let me point out at the outset that it was purely by chance that I started photographing dogs, of all things, in 2006. But it was not by chance that from the beginning it was not dogs as such, in other words their race, class or other characteristics that formed the focus of my interest. For me, the charm lay in taking or staging pictures as far as possible which present our canine companions in some sort of anthropogenic setting. The aims of the Museum Mensch and Natur obviously had a lasting effect on my interests.

Confronted by dogs, I quickly developed a different way of looking at their environment. It was a change of perception which influenced my experience of every aspect of life and made everything seem more interesting – whether I was out shopping or going for a walk, at home or on an excursion nearby or visiting distant countries. For example, in March 2007 I flew to New York – somewhat reluctantly and for the last time, as I thought at the time. But the city’s remarkable canine world converted me completely and made me indescribably curious.

Dogs, as a product of the society in which they live, no doubt reflect many aspects of everyday life. To investigate this by studying and photographing dogs has proved to be stimulating for both body and soul.
